Movie Review: Atonement @ 2:24 PM |
|
title: Atonement starring: Keira Knightley and James McAvoy rating: PG13 - About: love, war, atonement.
- Setting: 1940's - during British war, England
- Casting: i was expecting keira knightley to be playing a role much like in pride & prejudice but this is completely different. james mcavoy looks a bit like russell crowe.
- Rating: its pg13 but i think it should be raised for the ff reasons:
- there's rape
- repeated use of the word 'cunt'. i'm not sure what it means exactly but i don't think it's very kid-friendly
- massacre of french school girls (it is during the war)
- cruelty to animals (specifically horses)
- lots of maimed soldiers
- should i go on?
- British: their accents were a bit heavy. they spoke quickly so i couldn't follow well.
- Story: we missed the first 10 minutes or so of the movie so it didn't make much sense. i strongly recommend reading the novel first before watching the movie. the thing is, it all became clear in the end.
- Ending: i really liked the ending. :)
Bottom line: what initially drew us to watch atonement was because it won loads of academy awards. we should have known. it was serious and dark and distrubing. i was so confused and bored during some of the parts. we even considered leaving the movie theater because the movie wasn't making sense. we seriously opted for over her dead body. but things picked up and the ending was awesome. it was still disturbing though.
